Product Overview

The Balham is a single-over-single bunk bed from Land of Beds, built from pine and MDF with white painted rails and natural pine corner posts for a contemporary two-tone look. Both bunks use a wooden slatted base that lets air circulate beneath the mattress, and each bunk accepts a standard UK single mattress, up to 18cm deep on the top bunk. A guard rail runs along the top bunk, and a fixed side ladder gives easy access. The Balham arrives flat packed in 1 box for self-assembly, and mattresses are not included.

Who Is This Bunk Bed For?

The Balham from Land of Beds is a pine and MDF single-over-single bunk bed in a two-tone white and natural pine finish, with wooden slatted bases, a guard rail on the top bunk and a fixed side ladder, designed for two children sharing a room, with mattresses not included.

Best for

  • Two children sharing a room - the single-over-single configuration gives each child their own full-length sleeping space
  • Children's bedrooms where floor space is limited - the vertical stacking gives two sleeping surfaces without doubling the floor area
  • Parents who want reassurance on top bunk safety - the guard rail on the top bunk helps prevent a child rolling out during the night
  • Bedrooms with a contemporary look - the two-tone white and natural pine finish brings a fresh, bright feel with the warmth of natural wood
  • Sleepers up to 76kg (12st) on the top bunk and 76kg (12st) on the lower bunk

Not ideal for

  • Children under 6 years old - the top bunk is not recommended for children under 6. The lower bunk only is suitable for younger children.
  • Those who need a thick mattress on the top bunk - the maximum mattress depth for the top bunk is 18cm; mattresses deeper than this reduce the effective guard rail height. Check before ordering.
  • Those who need professional assembly - bunk beds are flat-pack and self-assembly only; a professional build service is not available for this product.

Worth Knowing

  • Safety note: the top bunk is not recommended for children under 6 years old. The guard rail is designed to work with a mattress up to 18cm deep - do not use a mattress deeper than this on the top bunk.
  • Mattresses are not included. Two standard UK single mattresses (90 x 190cm) are needed, each no deeper than 18cm.
  • This bunk bed arrives flat packed in 1 box and requires approximately 45 minutes to assemble with two people. Professional assembly is not available for bunk beds.
  • The Balham can be taken down and reassembled if needed - keep the instructions for future reference.

Inside This Bunk Bed

Pine and MDF Frame
What it is: A bunk bed frame constructed from pine and MDF, with white painted rails and ladder and natural pine corner posts.
How it helps you: Pine gives the frame a sturdy, durable structure that is built to last, and the two-tone finish pairs clean, bright white with the warmth of natural wood to suit a variety of bedroom styles.

Wooden Slatted Base
What it is: A slatted wooden base supporting the mattress on each bunk.
How it helps you: Allows air to circulate beneath the mattress, helping it breathe for a more comfortable sleep.

Fixed Ladder
What it is: A fixed ladder attached to the side of the frame, with flat rungs leading up to the top bunk.
How it helps you: The fixed position means the ladder cannot slip or be moved accidentally, giving children a steady route up to and down from the top bunk.

Top Bunk Guard Rail
What it is: A safety rail fitted along the side of the top bunk, with an opening beside the ladder for access.
How it helps you: Helps prevent the sleeper from rolling out during the night - the rail is designed to be used with a mattress no deeper than 18cm, which keeps the effective rail height within the safety specification.

How it Compares

Vs mid sleepers: A mid sleeper has an elevated single bunk with usable space beneath - usually a desk, pull-out bed, or storage - but sleeps only one child. A bunk bed sleeps two in a similar vertical footprint. If you need to sleep two children in one room, a bunk bed is the more space-efficient choice. If you need a workstation or play area beneath the bed for one child, a mid sleeper is the better fit.

Vs high sleepers: A high sleeper raises a single bed to a greater height than a mid sleeper, with a full workstation, sofa, or wardrobe underneath. It sleeps one child and suits teenagers who want a dedicated study or lounge space. A bunk bed prioritises sleeping capacity over under-bed functionality. If sleeping two is the goal, a bunk bed delivers it more directly.

Vs other bunk beds in the range: The Balham is a straightforward single-over-single design with no integrated storage, set apart by its two-tone white and natural pine finish. Bunk beds with built-in drawers or shelves add storage, typically at a higher price point, while single-over-double bunk beds can sleep up to three. If you want two sleeping spaces with a contemporary look and a compact footprint, the Balham covers the essentials.
