Your Guide to Buying Tempur

Tempur mattresses have a feel all of their own, and choosing one is a considered decision. You're paying for a particular kind of support, so the details matter: which firmness suits how you sleep, which size fits your bed, and what the mattress sits on. We've been helping customers get decisions like this right for over 50 years, with honest advice and no hard sell. This guide covers what you need to know before you buy.

What Matters When Choosing Tempur

Three things decide whether a Tempur mattress is right for you. Get these right and the rest comes down to personal preference.

Factor Why It Matters What to Check
Firmness TEMPUR material feels very different at each tension. The right one depends on your sleeping position and body weight. Soft, medium, medium firm or firm. Each listing shows which sleepers it suits.
Size Tempur mattresses come in standard, long-length and European sizes, so your mattress needs to match the bed it goes on exactly. Your bed frame or base size, and whether it takes a 190cm or 200cm length
Base Tempur mattresses need a solid or closely slatted base to give the support they're designed for. A divan base, or slats no more than 7cm apart

Tempur Mattress Size Guide

Our Tempur mattresses come in the sizes below. Your mattress should match your bed frame or base exactly, so measure before you order.

Size Dimensions Best For
Small Single Long (2ft 6) 75 x 200cm Taller children, teens and single sleepers in narrower rooms
Single (3ft) 90 x 190cm, or 90 x 200cm in Long Single Solo sleepers and guest rooms
Small Double (4ft) 120 x 190cm, or 120 x 200cm in Small Double Long Solo sleepers who want more room, compact couples
Double (4ft 6) 135 x 190cm, or 135 x 200cm in Long Double Couples in smaller bedrooms
King Size (5ft) 150 x 200cm Couples who want more width and length
European King (5ft 3) 160 x 200cm European-sized bed frames
Super King (6ft) 180 x 200cm Couples who want plenty of space, larger bedrooms
Small Emperor (6ft 6) 200 x 200cm Large main bedrooms and anyone who wants the most room

Long-length sizes add 10cm to the standard length, which suits taller sleepers. Size options can vary between products, so check the sizes on each listing before you order.

Quick Decision Guide: Which Tempur Firmness Is Right for You?

Choose Soft if:

  • You sleep mainly on your side
  • You're lighter in build and want the mattress to contour around you
  • You want as much cushioning as possible at the shoulders and hips

Choose Medium if:

  • You want more support than soft but still a cushioned feel
  • You sit somewhere between soft and medium firm and want a balance of the two

Choose Medium Firm if:

  • You change position during the night
  • You sleep on your back or front
  • You want a stable, supportive feel that still has some give

Choose Firm if:

  • You're heavier in build and need more resistance
  • You prefer to feel held firmly in position
  • Softer mattresses have felt unsupportive in the past

Customers trying memory foam for the first time are often surprised by how supportive the firmer Tempur tensions feel. Tempur isn't only about sinking in, so it's worth considering the full firmness range rather than assuming soft is the default.

Tempur vs Pocket Sprung Mattresses

If you've always slept on springs, this is the comparison that matters most. Here's how they differ.

Tempur Mattresses Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Construction All-foam layers built around TEMPUR material Individually pocketed springs with upholstery or foam comfort layers
Feel Contours closely to your body for targeted pressure relief More bounce and a springier, on-top feel
Partner disturbance Low. The material absorbs movement, so you're less likely to feel a partner turning over. Varies with spring count and construction
Temperature SmartCool cover absorbs excess body heat, and the open-cell material helps airflow Springs allow air to move through the core
Turning Single-sided, with no need for regular rotating Many need regular rotating, and some need turning
Best for Pressure relief, couples, anyone who likes a contouring feel Sleepers who prefer bounce and a more traditional feel

Neither is objectively better. If you're coming from a sprung mattress, the shallower mattresses in the Tempur range have a more responsive feel that's closer to what you're used to. Compare more options in our pocket sprung mattresses and memory foam mattresses ranges.

How Much Does Tempur Cost?

Tempur sits at the premium end of the market, but there are several ways in depending on what you need.

Range What You Get Best For
Tempur bedding Pillows, duvets, protectors and pillowcases. The most accessible way to try Tempur, with pillow protectors and pillowcases from under £50. Trying Tempur before committing to a mattress, or upgrading an existing bed
Shallower Tempur mattresses All-foam construction with the same TEMPUR material and SmartCool cover, at the lowest mattress price point in the range First-time Tempur buyers and anyone moving from a sprung mattress
Deeper Tempur mattresses Extra comfort layers for a more enveloping feel. Price rises with depth and size. Side sleepers who want maximum cushioning, and long-term investment buyers
Tempur beds Bases, ottomans, frames and adjustable beds, all with a 10-year guarantee. Bed bases start from under £500. Pairing a Tempur mattress with a compatible base

A Tempur mattress is a long-term purchase, and the 10-year guarantee reflects that. The best way to manage the cost is to choose the right firmness first, then the depth and size you actually need.

Mike Murray, Land of Beds CEO: "The first question we ask every Tempur customer is what the mattress is going on. A Tempur needs a divan or slats no more than 7cm apart. Put it on a frame with wide gaps and you won't get the support you've paid for."

Looking for Tempur at a lower price? Selected Tempur products are included in our sales, and we sometimes have clearance stock in specific sizes. Browse our clearance mattresses to see what's currently available.

Our Price Promise Guarantee means you won't pay more than you should. Finance options are available on eligible orders, including interest-free terms on some agreement lengths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question Answer
Is a Tempur mattress memory foam? Yes. Tempur mattresses are built around the brand's own TEMPUR material, a viscoelastic memory foam that responds to your weight, shape and temperature. The mattresses we stock are all-foam, with supportive base layers beneath the comfort layers.
Which Tempur firmness should I choose? Soft suits side sleepers and lighter builds who want cushioning at the shoulders and hips. Medium firm suits back, front and combination sleepers who need a stable, supportive feel. Firm suits heavier sleepers and anyone who prefers to feel held in position. Medium sits between soft and medium firm. Each listing explains which sleepers it suits, and our team can talk it through with you.
Do Tempur mattresses sleep hot? Memory foam has a reputation for feeling warm, which is why Tempur's current mattresses use a SmartCool cover designed to absorb excess body heat. The TEMPUR material also has an open-cell structure to help airflow. If you run hot, a cooling duvet or thermoregulating protector from the Tempur bedding range can help too.
What base do I need for a Tempur mattress? A divan base, or a slatted base with gaps of no more than 7cm. Wider gaps won't give the mattress the support it's designed for. Tempur makes its own bases, ottomans and frames, but any base that meets those requirements will work.
Do I need to turn a Tempur mattress? No. Tempur mattresses are single-sided, so don't flip them. They're designed as easy care, so you don't need to rotate them either, although you can if you prefer.
What guarantee comes with Tempur? Tempur mattresses and beds come with a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. Tempur bedding guarantees are shorter, from 1 to 3 years depending on the product. Check the individual listing for the exact terms.
Is there a sleep trial on Tempur mattresses? Selected Tempur mattresses include a 40-night comfort exchange, so if the firmness doesn't feel right you can exchange it. Terms apply, so read our mattress trial policy before you order and check the listing to confirm the trial applies.
Can I sleep on a Tempur mattress straight away? Yes. You may notice a slight smell when you first unwrap it. This is normal, harmless and fades within a few hours.
Do you offer free delivery on Tempur? Yes, on most orders over £100 to mainland UK addresses. Some remote postcodes may incur a charge. Many Tempur mattresses and beds take several weeks to arrive, and the estimated delivery time is shown on each listing. Old mattress removal can be added at checkout as a paid service. Call 01928 242829 if you'd like to talk through an order.
Can I buy Tempur on finance? Yes. We offer finance on eligible orders, including interest-free terms on some agreement lengths, and Klarna is also available. See our finance page for eligibility and how to apply.
What is Tempur's connection with NASA? Tempur is the only mattress brand recognised by NASA. TEMPUR material traces its origins to pressure-relieving foam developed by NASA, and in 1998 NASA recognised Tempur at a joint press conference for adapting that technology for everyday use. Tempur is also certified by the Space Foundation.
