Product Overview

The Explorer is a treehouse-inspired single-over-single bunk bed from Land of Beds, built from solid pine in a grey painted finish, with a pitched roof and a half canopy with a window over the top bunk. Both bunks use a wooden slatted base, the lower bunk sits close to the floor for younger children, and the top bunk accepts a standard UK single mattress up to 13.5cm deep. The Explorer arrives flat packed in 3 boxes for self-assembly. Mattresses are not included, but one or two Nimbus mattresses can be added at checkout.

Who Is This Bunk Bed For?

The Explorer from Land of Beds is a grey painted solid pine single-over-single bunk bed with a treehouse-inspired pitched roof and half canopy, wooden slatted bases, a low lower bunk and guard rails on the top bunk, designed for two children sharing a room, with an optional mattress bundle available at checkout.

Best for

  • Two children sharing a room - the single-over-single configuration gives each child their own full-length sleeping space
  • Imaginative children who love a den - the treehouse-inspired roof and windowed canopy turn the top bunk into a cosy hideaway
  • Younger siblings on the lower bunk - the lower bunk sits close to the floor, making it easy to climb in and out of bed
  • Families who want everything ready to go - the optional mattress bundle adds one or two Nimbus mattresses that sit within the 13.5cm top bunk depth limit
  • Sleepers up to 80kg (12st 8lb) on the top bunk and 80kg (12st 8lb) on the lower bunk

Not ideal for

  • Children under 6 years old - the top bunk is not recommended for children under 6. The lower bunk only is suitable for younger children.
  • Rooms with low ceilings - the Explorer stands 228cm (7ft6) tall including the roof frame, so measure your ceiling height before ordering.
  • Those who need a thicker mattress on the top bunk - the maximum mattress depth for the top bunk is 13.5cm; mattresses deeper than this reduce the effective guard rail height. Check before ordering.

Worth Knowing

  • Safety note: the top bunk is not recommended for children under 6 years old. The guard rails are designed to work with a mattress up to 13.5cm deep - do not use a mattress deeper than this on the top bunk.
  • Mattresses are not included. Two standard UK single mattresses (90 x 190cm) are needed, and the mattress on the top bunk must be no deeper than 13.5cm. An optional mattress bundle can be added at checkout - see the Complete Your Sleep Set-Up section below.
  • At 228cm (7ft6) tall, the Explorer is taller than a standard bunk bed because of its roof frame - check your ceiling height before ordering.
  • This bunk bed arrives flat packed in 3 boxes and requires approximately 45 minutes to assemble with two people. Professional assembly is not available for bunk beds.
  • The Explorer can be taken down and reassembled if needed - keep the instructions for future reference. It cannot be split into two single beds.

Inside This Bunk Bed

Solid Pine Frame
What it is: A bunk bed frame constructed from solid pine, painted in a grey finish.
How it helps you: Solid pine gives the frame a sturdy, durable structure that is built to last, and the soft grey finish pairs easily with neutral or brightly coloured bedrooms.

Treehouse Roof and Half Canopy
What it is: A pitched roof frame over the top bunk, with a boarded roof section and a slatted canopy wall with a window at the head end.
How it helps you: Adds an extra layer of security for the upper sleeper and gives a cosy, den-like feel that makes bedtime more exciting.

Wooden Slatted Base
What it is: A slatted wooden base supporting the mattress on each bunk.
How it helps you: Allows air to circulate beneath the mattress, helping it breathe for a more comfortable sleep.

Low-Profile Lower Bunk
What it is: The lower bunk is positioned close to the floor.
How it helps you: Reduces the risk of injury for younger or smaller children climbing in and out of bed.

Fixed Ladder
What it is: A fixed ladder attached to the side of the frame, with flat rungs leading up to the top bunk.
How it helps you: The fixed position means the ladder cannot slip or be moved accidentally, giving children a steady route up to and down from the top bunk.

Top Bunk Guard Rails
What it is: Safety rails fitted around the open sides of the top bunk, with an opening beside the ladder for access.
How it helps you: Helps prevent the sleeper from rolling out during the night - the rails are designed to be used with a mattress no deeper than 13.5cm, which keeps the effective rail height within the safety specification.

How it Compares

Vs mid sleepers: A mid sleeper has an elevated single bunk with usable space beneath - usually a desk, pull-out bed, or storage - but sleeps only one child. A bunk bed sleeps two in a similar vertical footprint. If you need to sleep two children in one room, a bunk bed is the more space-efficient choice. If you need a workstation or play area beneath the bed for one child, a mid sleeper is the better fit.

Vs high sleepers: A high sleeper raises a single bed to a greater height than a mid sleeper, with a full workstation, sofa, or wardrobe underneath. It sleeps one child and suits teenagers who want a dedicated study or lounge space. A bunk bed prioritises sleeping capacity over under-bed functionality. If sleeping two is the goal, a bunk bed delivers it more directly.

Vs other bunk beds in the range: The Explorer stands out for its treehouse-inspired roof and half canopy, which give the top bunk a den-like feel that standard bunk beds do not offer. Simpler single-over-single bunk beds are typically lower and suit rooms with standard ceiling heights, while bunk beds with drawers or trundles add storage or an extra sleeping space. If you want a bunk bed that doubles as a cosy reading den, the Explorer is the more imaginative choice.

Complete Your Sleep Set-Up

Mattresses are not included with the Explorer. Two standard UK single mattresses (90 x 190cm) are required - one for each bunk. The maximum mattress depth for the top bunk is 13.5cm. If you would prefer a matched recommendation, the following mattress has been selected to work with this bed, and one or two can be added at checkout.

Nimbus Mattress

  • Medium (3/6) feel - suits side, back, front and combination sleepers, balancing comfort and support for growing children
  • Foam construction - lightweight and easy to handle, making bed changes on the top bunk simpler
  • Memory foam - shapes to the contours of the body and springs back when pressure is released, relieving pressure and supporting spinal alignment
  • Soft reflex foam - adds an extra layer of support and softness for deep comfort all night long
  • Soft quilted cover - gives soft cushioning and an even, comfortable sleeping surface
  • Rolled and vacuum packed - easy to carry upstairs and through tight spaces, and ready to use around two hours after unpacking
  • 10.5cm deep - at 10.5cm deep, this mattress is within the 13.5cm top bunk limit and is suitable for both bunks
  • 10 year warranty on the Nimbus mattress for peace of mind

Ready to Set Up the Room?

The Explorer gives two children their own full-length sleeping space, with a treehouse-inspired roof and windowed canopy over the top bunk, a low lower bunk for younger children and wooden slatted bases on both bunks. Built from solid pine in a soft grey painted finish, it turns a shared bedroom into somewhere children look forward to going to bed. An optional mattress bundle of one or two Nimbus mattresses is available at checkout.
